A Winter Haven woman has been charged with child neglect after putting her son in a taxi and sending him to the home of a former neighbor in Lake Wales, a Winter Haven police arrest report said.
Carriala Scurry, 25, called a cab to her home Thursday about 10:40 p.m. and the 7year-old was driven to an apartment in Lake Wales, the arrest report said.
The woman at the apartment called police, telling them she just gotten out of the hospital and was not able to care for the child. She said she had not spoken to Scurry recently and had no idea the child was being sent to her home, the police report said.
Scurry was arrested at 12:17 a.m. Friday on a charge of thirddegree felony child neglect, the report said.

Come on! A taxi ride is child neglect?! That’s insane! I used to be sent by taxi to places when I was a kid, alone, and it was fun for me. Charging the woman just seems wrong.

Said this at 9:48am:Yeh, but the crucial factor here is she’s obviously bat-shit crazy, sending her kid to someone else’s house without so much as a phone call or pre-arrangement. In the olden days they probably wouldn’t have charged her, but still might have taken the child away from her….then again, I’m not really sure on that.
I know what you’re speaking of, something like sending your kid on an airplane trip all by themselves to go see grandma in California or something. Would I do it though? No way. ;p

Said this at 7:02pm:Yeah, you got my drift. I don’t know if the woman was off her nut or just plain fucked up, but I think the punishment is too harsh. However, I don’t know the whole story, so I just go on the basis of sending a child by taxi to someone else’s house, which happened to me a lot when I was a kid.
